Bear Encounters in Istria: Stay Safe with Local Advice#
For the second time this month, a bear has been spotted near Umag, a popular tourist destination in Istria, Croatia. According to local hunter Franko Udovičić, the bear was likely searching for food and exploring new areas.
Spring arrives, and bears come out of hibernation hungry. That push for food can lead them into new areas, including ours, which is when unexpected encounters happen.
While coming face-to-face with a wild bear can be alarming, it is important to remember that these animals are not usually aggressive toward humans. Bear attacks are rare and typically occur when the bear feels threatened or cornered. The key rule when encountering a bear is to stay calm and avoid panicking.
Gracijano Prekalj, president of the Istrian hunting association, advises avoiding following the bear and instead moving in a different direction. If you hear the bear moving, it is best to move away and give it space.
As human settlements push into wilder land, wildlife turns up in odd places more often. Udovičić points out that when natural habitats get neglected, bears drift closer to where people live. So it pays to be aware, and to take simple steps that keep both us and the bears safe.
To lower the odds of a bear encounter, keep your eyes open in bear country. Keep your distance, and skip the spots you know they forage. Bear spray helps too, if you know how to use it.
