Experience of a Vacation in Dalmatia

Social media has been loud lately about Dalmatia, mostly about how expensive a holiday there has become. After five days in Biograd na Moru, I’ve got a clear read on central Dalmatia.

Prices have jumped here, like everywhere in Croatia. People blame inflation, but 10% inflation doesn’t explain 40 to 50% price hikes on the ground. In the busiest tourist spots in Dalmatia, prices have gone up by 100% and more.

Plenty of visitors blame the euro switch, and yes, that’s part of it. But greed plays a part too. The season is short, the profit target stays the same, and the easiest lever to pull is the price tag.

I’d trace a lot of this back to the past three years. Since the pandemic, tourism here has exploded. The big spenders who came with it have also been hit by a surge in campsite prices, up by 200% in some cases to €100 for what is basically a patch of grass. Campsites are rebranding as glamping resorts, all paid for by the same tourists who keep coming back, year after year, no matter how loyal they’ve been.

The choice gets pretty easy when Dalmatia costs €2600 this year against €1600 last year. Add the road tolls and the EU-driven fuel prices, and the maths doesn’t improve. For the same family, an all-inclusive resort in Egypt comes in around €3200 with flights and meals included. That sidesteps the whole problem of rising accommodation, travel and food costs in one booking.

So is Croatia quietly wrecking its own tourism, or is this just how the game gets played in Europe?

If you’re still hunting for an affordable break, compare the major providers carefully before you book. Another option is the wider global range at Luxery Travel, which covers accommodation and travel in one place.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
#

Q: When is the best time to visit Dalmatia?

A: May to October is the main window. Summer is best for the beach, while spring and autumn are milder and quieter.

Q: What are the major expenses to consider during a trip to Dalmatia?

A: Accommodation, food, transport and activities. Prices have risen a lot in recent years, so build some slack into your budget and compare options before you commit.

Q: Are there affordable alternatives to Dalmatia for a family vacation?

A: Yes. All-inclusive resorts in places like Egypt can be competitive once you factor in flights and meals. Looking further afield often turns up better value for a family budget.
