Exploring Istria's Natural Beauty: The Seven Stunning Waterfalls

Posted on June 24, 2020  •  5 minutes  • 993 words

This route is a real treat for lovers of untouched nature. Some parts run through the playful riverbeds of the Draga and Mirna, in which the water formed lakes, rapids and waterfalls. But one of the most beautiful decorations of Mirna are holes, pits, columns and many shapes carved by water in the river bed. The path starts below Buzet, on the bridge over Mirna at the Istrian waterworks. From there we go upstream along the north side of Mirna. After the first kilometer we separate from the river Mirna and enter the forest where the road leads us along the rocky bed of the river Draga.

Here we are expected to climb 100 meters of elevation gain and five beautiful waterfalls in less than a kilometer. The narrow path leads us along the water and even over the water and under the impressive rocks that attract experienced climbers. The most difficult parts of our journey are secured with ropes that make our climb easier. Along the way you will come across abandoned shafts of old coal mines, which you can also look at if you have flashlights with you.

After the fifth waterfall (2.8 km) on a large serpentine we emerge from the Draga river bed and continue our way through the forest towards Selce (3.4 km). From there we head southeast along a road that runs between the forest and the fields. Shortly before the fifth kilometer we cross the Draga gorge again and 300 meters later, exactly on the fifth kilometer of our road, we break out on the macadam. We take it south to the right and leave it after less than 200 meters - at the first turn to the right, where we turn left onto a forest track.

Soon we come across dilapidated stone houses overgrown with ivy in the villages of Glistonija and Šćaveti, deserted hamlets of Blatna Vas. Here we reach the highest point of the trail (281 m). After about a kilometer of smooth road, we reach Kuhar, another hamlet of Blatna Vas, in whose picturesque stone houses people live in complete harmony with nature. Further on, the road leads us south towards Kotli (7.7 km). After a refreshment in the river Mirna below the sixth waterfall and enjoying the view of the picturesque cauldrons, we set off on a forest path above the river to the northwest. The road occasionally descends along hills and passes the seventh waterfall. We cross Pengari (11.4 km) Mirna three times. Somewhere around the 12th kilometer we close the circle and find ourselves again in the fertile fields along the river, from where we await a little over a kilometer walk along the south bank of the Mirna to the starting point of this beautiful trail. in whose picturesque stone houses people live in complete harmony with nature.
