Snoopy Shelter Pula: A Lifeline for Dogs#
Our Visit to Snoopy Shelter#
We visited Snoopy Shelter on a Sunday, the day the staff opens the doors to the public. You can volunteer, walk the dogs, or just have a look around. The shelter is housed in an old Austrian fort from around 1800.

Walking the Dogs#
Sundays, you can show up, walk a dog or play with the puppies. The volunteers will match you with a dog that fits you and that hasn’t been out yet. If you want a longer walk, tell them in advance so they can plan. Most people stick to the loop around the shelter and the fort, which gives you plenty of room.

Multiple Shelters in the Area#
When you arrive, you’ll see three shelters close together: a private one, a state-run one and another facility nearby. From the road, the state shelter looks badly outdated, starved of funding. A new state shelter is going up in Pula. Waste handling around the site, especially the plastic storage, is messy. At moments it looks more like a plastic war zone than anything else.

Run by Volunteers#
Snoopy Shelter runs almost entirely on donations and volunteer hours. Donating to a shelter you don’t know can feel like a leap, but a single visit tends to change that. The care here is a high standard: good food, attention and real time spent with each dog. They take goods from their needs list as happily as money, and there’s a “Wall of Fame” of all the dogs that have been adopted.

24/7 Volunteer Support#
Volunteers are on-site 24/7 and have access to a mobile home donated for their use.

A Sunday Walk with a Smile#
Not ready to adopt, but love being around dogs? Sundays are a good day to come, take one for a walk and spoil it a little with treats and attention. It suits anyone who can’t take on a pet full-time but still wants to do something real for a dog.
