Croatia Photography Locations: Best Photo Spots & Viewpoints
The complete guide to photographing Croatia. 69 viewpoints, 47 caves, 34 waterfalls and 100+ beaches mapped with coordinates, best light times and camera tips by a Local Guide Level 9 photographer.
Croatia may be the most photogenic country in the Mediterranean. Roman palaces, Venetian harbours, turquoise waterfalls, abandoned ruins and a coastline studded with over a thousand islands. This guide maps the best photography locations across the country, with coordinates, best light times and practical tips from years of shooting the Adriatic.
I am a Google Local Guide Level 9 with over 22 million photo views and 9,000+ published photographs. Every spot in this guide has been visited and photographed by me. No stock images, no guesswork.
What makes this guide different
Most “best photo spots in Croatia” lists recycle the same five Instagram locations. This guide draws from a database of 670+ mapped locations across six regions and seventeen categories. Each entry has real coordinates, an embedded map and honest notes on access, light and timing.
The photography categories
Viewpoints (69 mapped)
The places where the country opens up in front of your lens. Srd Hill above Dubrovnik, Vidova Gora on Brac (the highest Adriatic island peak), the Biokovo Skywalk, Vojak on Ucka, Tulove Grede in the Velebit. Each gives a different character of panorama, from sea-and-island to mountain-and-karst.
Waterfalls (34 mapped)
Plitvice’s 16 terraced lakes with 90+ waterfalls, Krka’s Skradinski Buk, the Rastoke village cascades, the Cetina and Zrmanja canyons. Waterfalls are best photographed in spring after snowmelt when the flow is loudest, or on overcast days when the light is soft and even.
Natural attractions (19 mapped)
The Zadar Sea Organ (best at sunset, when the sun sets into the water and the organ plays), the Greeting to the Sun installation, the Kamenjak cape, the Lim Fjord, the Bijele and Samarske Stijene white rock formations. These are the landscape features that make you stop the car.
Caves (47 mapped)
Modra Spilja on Bisevo (the Blue Cave, best around noon when the light enters the underwater opening), Cerovacke Spilje (the largest in Croatia), the Imotski Red and Blue Lakes. Caves need a tripod and a high ISO, and a jacket even in midsummer.
Best time of day for Croatian photography
| Time | Best for |
|---|---|
| Sunrise | Plitvice waterfalls, old towns (empty streets), mountain viewpoints |
| Golden hour (PM) | Coastal towns (Rovinj, Dubrovnik, Hvar), the Sea Organ, island coves |
| Midday | Caves (Blue Cave needs noon light), overcast days for waterfalls |
| Blue hour | Old town harbours, lit city walls, the Greeting to the Sun |
Best season
June and September are the photographer’s sweet spot. The light is warm, the water is clear, and the crowds are thinner than in July and August. October gives autumn colours at Plitvice and empty old towns. Winter is quiet, cheap and surprisingly rewarding, especially inland and in Zagreb.

DalmatiaFrequently asked questions
What are the best photography locations in Croatia?
Dubrovnik old town from the Srd cable car, the Plitvice waterfalls at sunrise, the Biokovo Skywalk, Stiniva cove on Vis, and the Zadar Sea Organ at sunset. All are mapped in this guide with coordinates and timing tips.
When is the best time to photograph Croatia?
Golden hour is essential on the coast. June and September give the best balance of light, weather and thinner crowds. Midsummer light is harsh and the popular spots are packed by 10am.
Do I need a permit for drone photography in Croatia?
Croatia requires drone registration and has strict no-fly zones over national parks, cities and military areas. Check the Croatian CAA before flying. Many of the best viewpoints in this guide are accessible on foot without a drone.
What camera gear do I need for Croatia?
A wide-angle lens for the old towns and waterfalls, a telephoto for compressing the islands, and a tripod for long exposures at the Sea Organ and Blue Cave. Neutral density filters help with the midday sun on white stone.
