Bakar

A historic port set deep in a sheltered bay, known since the 19th century for Bakarska Vodica sparkling wine and for the steep vineyard terraces above the water.

Bakar sits in Kvarner, a part of Croatia with its own character, and the city & town is the reason most people stop.

Mornings are quieter and cooler. Most old towns wake up slowly, so an early coffee is worth the effort.

• How to get there: Tap the map above for exact directions. In Croatian towns parking is usually signposted and paid, look for the blue P zones. If you are island hopping, leave buffer time for the ferries.

Best time to visit

Aim for May to October at Bakar, and within that, June and September for warm water without the peak crowds. High summer means heat and queues; winter, by contrast, is quiet, cheap and surprisingly handsome inland.
