Midday in July is the busy, hot, expensive hour. Aim for before 9 or after 5, and pack water shoes for the pebbles.

• How to get there: Use the map above for directions. Town parking is usually paid and signposted, watch for the blue P zones, and allow extra time if a ferry is part of your route.

Best time to visit

Beach is at its best from May to October. June and September are the sweet spot, warm water, long days, and thinner crowds than high July and August. Winter shows a quieter, cheaper and surprisingly handsome country, especially inland and in the cities.
