Biokovo Nature Park

Biokovo Nature Park covers the Biokovo mountain range, the great wall of karst that rises directly behind the Makarska Riviera and separates the coast from the hinterland. Its highest peak, Sveti Jure, reaches 1,762 metres, and from the top you can see the sea on one side and inland Bosnia and Herzegovina on the other. Protected since 1981, the park is a striking mix of botany, geology and views.

The biggest recent draw is the Biokovo Skywalk, a glass-floored walkway that juts out over the edge of the mountain at Ravna Vlaska, giving a vertiginous view straight down the cliffs to the coast. It opened in 2020 and is reached by the Biokovo road, a slow, scenic drive up from the Makarska side that itself is part of the experience.

Beyond the Skywalk, Biokovo is a hiking park, with trails up to Sveti Jure, botanical reserves of mountain flora, and the chance of seeing chamois and the rare Balkan wild horses. The drive up is narrow and busy in summer, so go early and book Skywalk tickets ahead.

For photographers, the view from Sveti Jure over the coast and islands is the prize, and the Skywalk gives the dramatic angle. Take a jacket, it is genuinely cold at the top even when the coast bakes.
