Brestovac Sanatorium

Brestovac Sanatorium opened in 1908 on the slopes of Mount Medvednica above Zagreb, built as a tuberculosis hospital at a time when the disease was a leading killer and fresh mountain air was the main treatment. For decades it served the city’s sick from its wooded clearing above the smog.

Tuberculosis declined with antibiotics, and the sanatorium outlived its original purpose, passing through other medical and institutional uses before being abandoned. Now its pavilions and wards sit empty in the forest, windows broken and paint peeling, slowly reclaimed by the trees that were once its cure.

The buildings are derelict and unsafe; floors and stairs are failing, and the site should not be entered casually. The sanatorium is easiest to reach on foot via the Medvednica hiking trails, which makes it a strange, atmospheric waypoint on a walk above the city rather than a destination in itself.

For photographers, the overgrown facades read best on an overcast day, when the forest and the ruin blend. Treat it as a fragile piece of medical history, not a film set.
