Cerovacke Spilje

Cerovačke pećine, the Cerovac Caves, are the largest cave complex open to visitors in Croatia, set in the Velebit foothills of Lika near Gračac. Three caves run one above the other, with roughly four kilometres explored in total and a shorter lit path for tourists.

The caves were discovered in the early 20th century and have drawn visitors for generations. Their scientific interest is real: the bones of the extinct cave bear have been found here, along with traces of prehistoric human use. The lower cave in particular is heavy with flowstone, columns and rimstone pools.

After a refurbishment the caves reopened with a visitor centre and guided tours along prepared paths. Bring a jacket, the interior holds a steady chill year-round, and wear closed shoes with grip. The visit is by guided tour only, so check the season before driving out; Lika is quiet and the drive is not short.

For photographs inside caves, a tripod is usually the difference between a usable shot and a blur; check whether one is permitted before you pack it. The Velebit scenery on the approach is half the reward.
