Dubovica Hvar

Dubovica is one of the best-known coves on the south coast of the island of Hvar, a pebble beach set in a rocky bay with an old stone house and a chapel right at the water’s edge. The cove is the classic image of a hidden Hvar swimming spot, and it is reached either by a rough road and a short descent or by boat from Hvar Town.

The south coast of Hvar is steeper and less developed than the north, a line of coves cut into the limestone, and Dubovica is the most photographed of them. The water is clear, the pebble is pale, and the old house gives the cove a distinctive look that has made it a postcard subject. There is a small bar in season.

The descent to the beach is steep and rough, a path down the cliff that takes some care, and in peak summer the cove is busy with both walkers and boats. The pine gives some shade at the edges, but most of the beach is in full sun.

For photographers, the stone house at the water’s edge is the shot, best in the morning before the boats arrive. Take reef shoes for the pebbles, water and sun cover, and consider the boat option if the cliff path is more than you want.
