Haludovo Palace Hotel Krk

The Haludovo Palace Hotel is a sprawling 1971 resort above the sea at Malinska on the island of Krk, and its strangeness is half the story. It was part-funded by Bob Guccione, the publisher of Penthouse, who imagined a luxury Mediterranean playground for the international jet set. The Yugoslav workers’ resort upstairs and the casino downstairs were always an awkward pairing, and the dream did not outlive the decade.

After the war and the privatisation chaos of the 1990s and 2000s, Haludovo slid into abandonment. Today its terraces, pools and concrete wings are among the largest and most famous modernist ruins on the coast, a landmark for urban explorers even as redevelopment plans come and go.

The site is private and derelict; floors are rotten and staircases give way, so a casual visit is genuinely dangerous. The most you can safely do is view the exterior from the access road. Anything beyond that is at your own risk and against the owner’s wishes.

For photographers, the tiered concrete and the faded glamour are best from the seaward side at golden hour. Respect the fences; this ruin is not as solid as it looks.
