Hotel Belvedere Dubrovnik: Inside the Famous Abandoned Ruin

The Hotel Belvedere sits on a cliff above the old town of Dubrovnik, a 1985 luxury hotel that has stood empty since it was damaged in the 1991 siege of the city. For decades its glass and concrete have overlooked the walls and the sea below, unused while a slow, contested redevelopment drags on.

Its second life has been on screen: the hotel’s interior was used as a filming location, most famously standing in for a fight scene in Game of Thrones. That brought a steady trickle of curious visitors to a building that was never meant to be a ruin.

The site is fenced and private, and entering it is trespass and unsafe; the structure has had no maintenance for thirty years. The view from the public path outside, however, is one of the best free panoramas over the old town and Lokrum island, and it costs nothing to stand and look.

For photographers, the exterior at sunset, with the old town walls below, is the picture to take. Do not risk the interior for a different angle; it is not worth the fall.
