Jasenovac Memorial

Jasenovac is the site of the concentration and extermination camp run by the Ustaše regime during the Second World War, on the bank of the Sava river. Tens of thousands of people, mostly Serbs, Jews and Roma, were killed here. The memorial is one of the most important Second World War commemorative sites in this part of Europe.

At its centre stands the Stone Flower (Kameni cvijet), a sculpted concrete bloom by Bogdan Bogdanović unveiled in 1966, rising above the flat river plain. Around it are the preserved earthworks and foundations of the camp, a museum, and memorial markers. The atmosphere is deliberately quiet and austere.

This is a place of mourning, not a tourist attraction. Visit to remember, allow time, and treat the site and other visitors with care. The museum contextualises what happened here, and it is the right place to start before walking the grounds.
