Korčula

A medieval walled town on the island of Korčula, laid out by the Venetians with narrow fishbone-plan streets and defensive towers around the Cathedral of St Mark, traditionally associated with the claimed birthplace of Marco Polo.

Korčula sits in Dalmatia, a part of Croatia with its own character, and the city & town is the reason most people stop.

Mornings are quieter and cooler. Most old towns wake up slowly, so an early coffee is worth the effort.

When to go

For Korčula, May to October is the dependable window. June and September are ideal, warm and lighter on crowds than July and August. In winter the country turns quieter and cheaper, especially in the inland cities.
