Krvavica Childrens Resort

The children’s resort at Krvavica, on the Makarska Riviera, is a striking 1963 building designed by the architect Rikard Marasović as a modernist health resort for children, all curved concrete forms and organic lines set against the pine and the sea. It is one of the more unusual pieces of Yugoslav-era architecture on the coast.

The resort operated for decades before falling into disuse and abandonment, and its curved terraces and domed roof have spent years open to the weather. Architects and heritage groups have campaigned for its preservation, arguing it is a significant modernist work at risk of being lost.

The building stands near the main coastal road and is visible from the beach below, which is the safe way to view it. The structure itself is derelict and not safe to enter. Its future is undecided, so the building you see today may not be the one that stands in five years.

For photographers, the sweeping horizontal curves are best framed wide from the beach or the road. If modernist architecture is your interest, pair it with other Yugoslav-era sites along the coast.
