Labin

A double town in eastern Istria, a Venetian hilltop old town above a working class quarter that grew around coal mines opened in the 19th century. The miners famously declared the short lived Labin Republic in 1921.

Labin sits in Istria, a part of Croatia with its own character, and the city & town is the reason most people stop.

Shoulder season, May or September, gives you the charm without the cruise ship crowds. Wander off the main street, the best cafés and doorways are one alley over.

When to go

For Labin, May to October is the dependable window. June and September are ideal, warm and lighter on crowds than July and August. In winter the country turns quieter and cheaper, especially in the inland cities.
