The Lastovo Islands Nature Park covers the remote island of Lastovo and its archipelago of more than forty islets, far out in the south Dalmatian sea. Protected since 2006, it is one of the least light-polluted places in the Mediterranean, and the park’s quiet rules on lighting are designed to keep the night sky dark, a genuine draw for stargazers.

Lastovo is quieter and greener than its fame would suggest. The main town is built in an amphitheatre of old stone houses and Renaissance chimneys, each one different, and the island has a long, idiosyncratic history, including a famous carnival tradition. The coast is a ring of coves, caves and clean water.

Because it is hard to reach, a long ferry from Split or the faster catamaran to Ubli, Lastovo has stayed undeveloped by Dalmatian standards. That is the whole point of going. Bring patience with the ferry timetable.

For photographers, the chimneys of Lastovo town and the unpolluted night sky are the distinctive shots. Allow a couple of nights rather than a day trip, and check ferry times carefully before you commit.
