Lepoglava

A Zagorje town known for its 14th century Pauline monastery, later turned into one of Croatia’s most notorious prisons. Its handmade Lepoglava lace is inscribed on the UNESCO intangible heritage list.

Lepoglava sits in Central Croatia, a part of Croatia with its own character, and the city & town is the reason most people stop.

Mornings are quieter and cooler. Most old towns wake up slowly, so an early coffee is worth the effort.

• How to get there: Use the map above for directions. Town parking is usually paid and signposted, watch for the blue P zones, and allow extra time if a ferry is part of your route.

Timing your trip

Aim for May to October at Lepoglava, and within that, June and September for warm water without the peak crowds. High summer means heat and queues; winter, by contrast, is quiet, cheap and surprisingly handsome inland.
