Lisicine

A deserted village in the Virovitica-Podravina hills, typical of the rural settlements that lost their population to urban migration and war across inland Croatia.

Lisicine sits in Central Croatia, a part of Croatia with its own character, and the abandoned place is the reason most people stop.

Ruins are unstable. Do not climb on structures, watch for loose masonry and never go in alone. Many of these places are sites of difficult history, so move quietly and take nothing.

• Entry: check the official source before you travel. Prices and opening hours change, and some spots close entirely out of season.
• How to get there: The map above gives exact directions. Expect paid, signposted parking in most towns (blue P zones), and pad your schedule if you are catching a ferry to an island.

When to go

Aim for May to October at Lisicine, and within that, June and September for warm water without the peak crowds. High summer means heat and queues; winter, by contrast, is quiet, cheap and surprisingly handsome inland.
