Mali Bok Cres

Mali Bok is a small pebble cove on the steep east coast of the island of Cres, set at the foot of a high limestone cliff and reached only by a rough, steep path down from the village of Lubenice above. It is one of the most dramatic of the hidden coves on the Kvarner islands, a strip of pale pebble between the cliff and the deep blue water.

The cove is the natural pair to the village above it. Lubenice is a medieval cliff-top settlement, one of the oldest on Cres, sitting on a narrow spur of rock nearly four hundred metres above the sea, and the path down to Mali Bok drops from the village to the cove in a series of switchbacks.

Because of the descent, Mali Bok stays quieter than the reachable beaches, and the cove is the reward for the climb. The water is very deep and clear, the pebble is pale, and the cliff gives shade at one end for part of the day. There are no facilities at the cove.

For photographers, the cove from the cliff at Lubenice and the view up the cliff from the beach are the shots. Take serious shoes for the path, water for the climb back up, and avoid the hottest part of the day for the ascent.
