Marjan Hill Split

Marjan is the forested hill-peninsula that rises to the west of Split’s old town, and it is the city’s green escape, a park of pine, cypresses, hidden churches, viewpoint terraces and small coves, all within a short walk of the centre. For a city that can feel dense in summer, Marjan is the release valve.

The hill has been a protected park since the 1950s, and its network of paths climbs to viewpoint terraces over the city and the sea, past a series of small medieval churches hermits carved into the rock. The southern side of the peninsula holds the beaches where the locals swim, beneath the pines, and the northern side holds a more rugged coastline and the Jewish cemetery.

Marjan is the obvious morning run or evening walk from Split, and it gives the best view back over the city and the harbour. The top of the hill, Telegrin, has a 19th-century survey point and a panorama over the whole Split area, the islands and the mountains inland.

For photographers, the view of Split from the Marjan terraces at sunset is the shot. Wear real shoes if you plan to walk the full circuit, and take water, the pine shade hides how hot the paths get.
