Modro Jezero Imotski

Modro Jezero, the Blue Lake, is the friendlier of Imotski’s two karst lakes, a deep blue pool sitting in a sinkhole you can actually walk down into. Unlike its neighbour the Red Lake, there is a path, and in summer locals swim, sunbathe and even play football on the flat ground when the water drops low enough.

The lake’s level swings dramatically through the year, fed by rain and underground springs. In wet winters it fills high against the cliffs; in dry late summers it can shrink to almost nothing, and the exposed bed becomes an impromptu pitch. The descent is steep, but real steps and a track lead down to the water.

Combine it with the Red Lake above town; they are a short drive and a short walk apart and tell the same karst story from two different angles.

For photographs, the cliffs read best in the hour after sunrise, before the sun is fully in the pit. Take water for the climb back out; there is little shade on the path and the heat stacks at the bottom in August.
