Osijek

Osijek is the largest city in Slavonia and its historic capital, standing on the right bank of the Drava river in the east of Croatia. It is a genuine working city rather than a tourist one, and its appeal lies in the Tvrđa, the 18th-century Habsburg fortress-quarter, whose grid of baroque squares, churches and barracks is one of the finest ensembles of its kind in the country.

The Tvrđa was built on the old Military Frontier, the line of garrisons facing the Ottoman Empire, and its scale reflects that military purpose, broad bastions, a central parade square, the church of St Michael and a set of handsome barracks that now hold museums and bars. Walked in the evening, it is one of the most atmospheric old quarters in eastern Croatia.

Osijek sits on the Drava, and the river promenade and the pedestrian centre outside the Tvrđa are where the city’s life happens. It is the natural base for exploring eastern Slavonia, the Kopački Rit wetlands and the Baranja wine region.

For photographers, the Tvrđa at dusk and the Drava bridges read best. Pair Osijek with Kopački Rit and the Baranja hill country for a proper eastern Croatia trip, and use it as the alternative to the coast entirely.
