Sea Organ Zadar

The Sea Organ, Morske orgulje, is a set of marble steps running along Zadar’s waterfront, and it plays music, not by any mechanism you can see, but through the sea itself. Under the steps, the waves push air through a system of tuned pipes, and as the water rises and falls the organ breathes out long, resonant notes. It was designed by the architect Nikola Bašić and completed in 2005.

The Sea Organ was built as part of the repair of the old waterfront, and it turned a plain concrete promenade into one of the most loved public spaces in the country. People sit on the steps at sunset and simply listen, and the sound, low and shifting, is genuinely calming. Right next to it is Bašić’s second installation, the Greeting to the Sun, a circle of solar panels in the pavement that lights up after dark.

There is no entry charge and no opening hours, it is a piece of the city. The best time is the hour around sunset, when the light, the sound and the crowd all come together.
