Skradinski Buk Krka

Skradinski Buk is the largest, lowest and most famous of the waterfalls of the Krka river, a broad, multi-tiered drop where the whole width of the river spills over a series of tufa barriers into a deep pool below. It is the centrepiece of Krka National Park and the single sight most visitors come for.

The waterfall is some 800 metres wide across its full set of barriers and drops a total of 45 metres over its length, with a network of wooden boardwalks crossing over and around the barriers so you can walk among the cascades and the small islands between them. The water builds the barriers itself, depositing tufa as it flows, and the barriers are alive, shifting and growing over the years.

Skradinski Buk is the main loop of the park, reached from the Lozovac entrance, and it can be combined with the boat trip to Visovac island and the Roški Slap waterfall further upriver. Note that swimming, once allowed in the pool below the falls, is now restricted here to protect the ecosystem.

For photographers, the wide sweep of the barriers and the boardwalks over the water are the shots, best in soft light and with a neutral-density filter for the moving water. Go early, the boardwalks at Skradinski Buk are the busiest single point in the park.
