Srđ Dubrovnik

Mount Srđ is the 412-metre hill that rises directly behind Dubrovnik’s old town, and its top gives the single best view of the city, the walls and the sea, the image that has become the standard aerial shot of Dubrovnik. It is reached by a cable car from just outside the Ploče gate, a ride of a few minutes, or by a steep walking path.

On the summit sits the Imperial Fortress, built by the French in the Napoleonic period and more recently a key position in the 1991 siege of Dubrovnik, now holding a small museum about that siege, the Homeland War Museum. The view from the fortress terrace takes in the whole old town, the island of Lokrum, the Elaphiti islands and the coast down to the bay of Cavtat.

Srđ is the spot people go to at sunset, and the cable car gets a queue at that hour in the summer. The alternative is the walking path up the north side of the hill, which takes about an hour and is the quieter, more rewarding way up if you have the legs.

For photographers, the panorama of the old town and the sea from the summit is the image everyone wants, best at the golden hour into sunset. Take a layer for the top, the wind is different up there, and book the cable car ahead in peak season.
