Trogir

Trogir is a small walled town on a tiny island between the Croatian mainland and the larger island of Čiovo, a short drive from Split, and its whole historic core is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the best-preserved ensembles of medieval and Renaissance stone architecture on the Adriatic coast.

The town was a Greek and then a Roman settlement, and later a Venetian one, and its wealth shows in the stone. The cathedral of St Lawrence, with its grand west portal carved by the master Radovan in the 13th century and its attached bell tower, is the centrepiece. Around it sit the Kamerlengo fortress, the old city gates, a loggia, a clutch of palaces and a warren of narrow lanes that read exactly as a medieval town should.

Because Trogir sits on an island connected by bridges, it stays compact, and you walk it in a couple of hours, though most people stay longer for the restaurants and the waterfront. It is busy in summer, as it lies on the route between Split and the airport.

For photographers, the Kamerlengo fortress at dusk and the Radovan portal in morning shadow are the shots. Walk the waterfront promenade to the Čiovo bridge for the classic view back over the town.
