Veternica

Veternica is a stream cave on Medvednica, the forested mountain that rises behind Zagreb, and one of the easiest real caves to reach from the capital. About seven kilometres have been mapped, and its name comes from the rush of cold air that pours from the entrance on a warm day.

The cave is a protected geomorphological monument and has been a show cave for more than a century. Inside are the expected stalactites and flowstone, fossil remains of cave bears, and traces of an underground stream that still runs in the lower levels after rain. A guided tour covers the lit section; the wilder passages are for speleologists only.

It opens seasonally, usually in the warmer months, and the visit is by guided tour only. Take a layer for the chill and shoes you can walk on wet stone in. The cave is reached from the Medvednica hiking network, so you can fold it into a half-day walk above the city.

For photographs, the single lit path limits the compositions; expose for the highlights and accept that handheld shots will be soft. The mountain above, with Sljeme at the top, is the bigger draw for most locals.
