A former medieval county seat of Slavonia, dominated by the Rococo Pejačević castle, one of the best preserved noble residences in the region.

Virovitica sits in Slavonia, a part of Croatia with its own character, and the city & town is the reason most people stop.

Shoulder season, May or September, gives you the charm without the cruise ship crowds. Wander off the main street, the best cafés and doorways are one alley over.

Practical info

  • Entry: look up the current price and opening hours before you go. Both change through the year, and a few spots close completely out of season.
  • How to get there: Tap the map for the route. Croatian town parking is mostly paid and marked with blue P signs; if your trip involves an island, build buffer time in for the ferry.

When to go

Plan Virovitica for May to October, with June and September the quietest warm months. July and August bring the crowds and the heat; winter is cheaper and handsomer than people expect, especially in the inland cities.
