Visovac Monastery Krka

Visovac is a small island in the middle of the Krka river, between the Roški Slap and Skradinski Buk waterfalls, and on it stands a 15th-century Franciscan monastery and a hermitage. The island is tiny, a few hundred metres around, but its setting, of cypress, bell tower and white stone reflected in the still river, makes it one of the most photographed sights in the whole of Krka National Park.

The monastery has been a Franciscan house since the 1440s, and its small museum holds a collection of books, documents and liturgical objects gathered over the centuries, including a 14th-century sword and a rare Turkish ferman. The friars still live on the island, which is part of what gives the place its quiet.

Visovac is reached by boat, on short trips run from the Roški Slap side of the park, and the boat ride up the calm stretch of the river is half the experience. The visit on the island is short, a look around the church, the cloister and the museum.

For photographers, the classic image of the island and its reflection is taken from the boat on the approach, so have the camera ready. Pair it with the Roški Slap waterfalls and the broader Krka loop.
