Vrlika

A small inland town near the source of the Cetina river, overlooked by the medieval Prozor fortress. It was badly hit during the 1990s war and has since been partly rebuilt.

Vrlika sits in Dalmatia, a part of Croatia with its own character, and the city & town is the reason most people stop.

Mornings are quieter and cooler. Most old towns wake up slowly, so an early coffee is worth the effort.

• Entry: check the official source before you travel. Prices and opening hours change, and some spots close entirely out of season.
• How to get there: The map above gives exact directions. Expect paid, signposted parking in most towns (blue P zones), and pad your schedule if you are catching a ferry to an island.

Timing your trip

Vrlika is at its best from May to October. June and September are the sweet spot, warm water, long days, and thinner crowds than high July and August. Winter shows a quieter, cheaper and surprisingly handsome country, especially inland and in the cities.
