Explore hiking trails, admire stunning scenery, and discover the rich wildlife and biodiversity of the region. Whether you are a nature lover, photographer, or adventure seeker, Biokovo has something for everyone.
Biokovo Nature Park is a vast area where you can easily spend half a day or a full day exploring. With an altitude of 1,762 meters and a 23-kilometer route to reach the summit, the drive itself is impressive. While reaching the top is achievable by car or bicycle, the road has been paved since 1978. At the summit, you’ll find Croatia’s tallest structure, the state radio and television antenna.
As you drive along the narrow roads towards the summit, you’ll pass through many valleys and see quaint houses. Some cottages are for private use, but there are also recreational accommodations available for nature enthusiasts who enjoy hiking and cycling. The landscape often resembles a lunar terrain, with every turn revealing a new view. Declared a Natural Park in 1981 and officially established by Croatia in 1998, Biokovo is a testament to the region’s natural beauty.
The park is open year-round for accommodation owners, but nature visits are restricted from November 1 to March 31. Tickets are best purchased online due to limited access (15-20 cars per hour). There are picnic areas throughout the park and a restaurant available. However, there are no toilets in October, which is inconvenient given the high visitor numbers. This closure has puzzled many, including local businesses affected by the lack of facilities. Check here for opening times.
The drive to the Skywalk at 1,228 meters is challenging and can feel like a race to the top. Refuges every 300 meters help manage oncoming traffic. The route offers spectacular views over Makarska and the surrounding areas. Once at the Skywalk, you can walk on an 11-meter cliff, with the Skywalk extending 8.5 meters from the edge, providing stunning views for those not afraid of heights.
At the Skywalk, there’s a souvenir shop where you can buy mementos like t-shirts, key chains, and pencils with the park’s logo. Unfortunately, there are no terraces or drink vending machines available, which would enhance the visitor experience.
Cyclists you’ll encounter here are remarkably fit. The steep roads to the top, especially to Sveti Jure, the highest peak, are a true challenge. At around 1,500 meters, you’ll also find a park ranger who provides assistance to visitors. At this altitude, the landscape transforms into a lunar-like terrain.
Nature maintenance in Biokovo is partly done by the animals that roam freely. Horses and cows often cross the roads, particularly at the end of the day when they head to their watering places. Mules, which are hybrids of horses and donkeys, are also seen. While the foals might be shy, their mothers are always protective.
Despite the cool weather, our trip to Biokovo was thoroughly enjoyable. Although the excursion took longer than expected, the experience was fantastic. The return trip offered stunning views of the sunset, with horses and cows crossing the road and the sun setting behind the islands. A remarkable experience that is highly recommended!
